Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be able to swim?

No . You do not need to be able to swim in order to participate in Aquatic Physiotherapy. We will adapt our treatment sessions depending on your comfort and abilities within the pool.

2

Is aquatic physiotherapy right for me?

You will be assessed on land by a physiotherapist before your first aquatic physiotherapy appointment to check that there aren't any reasons why you shouldn't come into the hydrotherapy pool. There are certain conditions which  may prevent you from participating in aquatic physiotherapy and others that we need to be aware of in order to make adaptations for your safety. We will go through a checklist of these at your initial assessment and discuss any potential considerations.

3

How will I feel afterwards?

The warm temperature of the water and exercise can make you feel tired after the session so be prepared to need to rest or sleep afterwards. It's important to make sure that you remain hydrated and drink plenty of water following your appointment. Any Tiredness or post-exercise soreness should be short-lived and resolve within 24 hours. If you find that this isn't the case, please let your physiotherapist know so that we can adapt your next session appropriately.

4

I struggle with incontinence. Does that mean that I cannot come in the pool?

There are ways that we can help you to manage incontinence that will potentially allow you to still access the pool. Incontinence of the bladder is more easily managed but bowel incontinence can also be managed carefully. Please speak to us if you would like to enquire about aquatic physiotherapy and need to discuss this further.

5

What should I bring with me?

  • Swimwear

  • Towel

  • A drink of water. This is very important as you loose a lot of fluid when in a pool.

  • Toiletries for showering afterwards

  • It may be helpful for you to wear splash shoes on your feet for grip whilst walking on the poolside and in the pool

If you need assistance with your personal care, please attend your appointment with someone who can help you. Your physiotherapist will help with getting in and out of the pool but we are unable to help with personal care.
